Whether you're a first-time rock collector or a seasoned field geologist, RockHound-GO's built-in field guide gives you the knowledge to find, identify, and collect responsibly — anywhere in the world.
Open the Field Guide →The Education Hub organizes content into four skill tiers: Beginner (first dig prep, basic ID), Intermediate (crystal systems, geological maps), Advanced (XRF, thin-section analysis, professional valuation), and Expert (mineralogy, petrology, locality research). Each completed module awards XP and contributes to your collector rank.
What topics does the rockhounding field guide cover?
The field guide covers mineral identification techniques, geological formation theory, field safety, proper collecting tools and techniques, how to read geological maps, understanding crystal systems, streak and hardness testing, specific region guides (Mojave, Oregon, Lake Superior, etc.), and beginner to expert lessons.
Is the field guide available offline?
Yes. Field guide lessons are cached for offline access so you can read them in remote areas without cell service. This is especially useful in the field before a dig.
Are there quizzes or lessons I can take?
Yes. The Education Hub includes structured lessons organized by skill level - Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. Each module includes a quiz to test your knowledge and awards XP on completion.
Does the guide cover land access and regulations?
Yes. The Land and Legality section explains BLM, USFS, NPS, and state land rules, how to read permit requirements, collection limits, and what to do if you encounter a mining claim. See also our dedicated Land Access page.
